One child dead, another missing at Letchworth Falls

NYS Police

Authorities have recovered the body of one of two children missing since they were swept over a waterfall in Letchworth State Park.

On Sunday afternoon, New York State Troopers said that a total of seven people went over the lower falls on Saturday at about 7 p.m. Five people were rescued and taken to Strong Hospital with injuries varying from serious to minor. They included 2 men and 3 girls.

On Sunday, police said that  a 9 year old and a 6 year old in the lower falls area were presumed drowned. The body of one of the victims was recovered on Sunday.

Areas near the falls were closed Sunday afternoon because of the ongoing operation. New York State Park Police, State Police , Wyoming County Deputies, State Police helicopters and an underwater recovery team were all involved in the search.

Names of the victims have not been released yet.

State police say the children were part of an extended family that was playing in the Genesee River in the park Saturday evening when someone slipped, causing the whole group to be carried over the Lower Falls waterfall.

Authorities say five people were rescued Saturday night. They were hospitalized with various injuries, from minor to serious. The children, ages six and nine, went missing and were presumed drowned.

On Sunday, state police said searchers had recovered the body of a child, but did not provide any other information. Recovery efforts are continuing.
