Planning Board approves Outer Harbor project

The Buffalo Planning Board has voted its approval on the controversial Queen City Landing project which would erect a 23-story residential complex along the Outer Harbor.

The panel approved the proposal by  a  five-to-one vote.

The $60-million plan would include the demolition of the former Freezer Queen building that has sat vacant for several years.

Some opponents have expressed concerns that excavation for the project could raise potentially polluted soil, threatening Lake Erie. Others say the location and height of the structure could pose a threat to the many species of migrating birds which make their way through the region each year.

The Common Council is expected to vote on the project on June 7th. Developer Gerry Buchheit hopes to break ground on the  project this year
