Another local health insurer has dropped Dr. Eugene Gosy - for now. Univera Healthcare announced it has suspended the Williamsville pain management doctor's participation with the health plan, pending a hearing to terminate him from the health plan's provider network.
Gosy pleaded not guilty to the 114 counts against him brought by federal prosecutors. They say the doctor issued thousands of illegal prescriptions, arranged for staff to complete prescription forms in his absence and committed fraud as far back as 2006. A grand jury handed up an indictment against Gosy last month.
In a statement, Univera said the other providers in Gosy's practice are not suspended. However the termination, if granted at the hearing, would be applicable to the entire practice.
Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Western New York already announced Gosy and his affiliated physicians are no longer participating providers for all of its networks. The reason given: "Closing the practice for two weeks with no contingency plan in place to provide available coverage to care for our member's medical needs is unacceptable," it said. Blue Cross said it will continue to find alternative solutions to accessing pain management care within its network.
The practice, Gosy & Associates Pain Treatment and Neurology, posted the temporary closing on its website May 2 and is expected to reopen May 16.
Independent Health also dropped Gosy, but only Gosy. "Removal of Dr. Gosy from the Independent Health network does not affect any other practicing physician in the office," the insurer said.
All insurers advise members to call the customer service phone number on the back of their member identification card to find another provider and for more information.
