"Walk A Mile in Her Shoes" heightens awareness of rape prevention

The 11th annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes will be held Sunday. It's designed to create awareness among men of efforts to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence.

Participants put on high-heeled shoes and walk a mile.

Robyn Wiktorski Reynolds is director of the Crisis Services Advocate Program. Eleven years after the first walk, she can't say sexual assaults are on the decrease. But the higher awareness has led elected leaders to fund prevention programs.

"Mostly notably on a federal level, there is President Obama's proposal to combat campus sexual assaults. There is also Governor Cuomo's 'Enough Is Enough' legislation. Some of those efforts are infusing dollars into local rape crisis centers," Wiktorski-Reynolds said. "Dollars are funding prevention efforts."

Walk A Mile in Her Shoes is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Crisis Services on Main Street, with the walk beginning at 1:00 p.m.
