Buffalo-based U.S. Coast Guardsmen are collaborating with other law enforcement agencies in learning how to respond to acts of terrorism.

On Thursday, personnel from Coast Guard Sector Buffalo at the Niagara station conducted an active shooter exercise, working with the U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The exercise tested and helped assess local response plans and capabilities. Simulated improvised explosive devices and ammunition were used to maximize the effect of the training.

Exercise planners said the collaboration and the relationships between law enforcement agencies is vitally important to the exercise, and guarantees a unified response effort.
