Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone joined leaders of Catholic Charities Tuesday in announcing the results of Appeal Week 2016. Malone say just over $8 million has been raised, so far. Malone says compared to last year at this time, the Appeal is a bit behind.
"That's because the Appeal is a little earlier this year because of the date of Easter. That does impact it. Some of our donors are away at this time of year," said Malone. "We're confident with everybody's good work and continued generosity, we'll get there."
Malone points out that Catholic Charities supports 70 programs and services throughout the eight counties of Western New York. The total raised to date represents 73% of the $11 million goal.
"It goes toward serving people who come to us, whatever their race or creed or what they believe or don't believe, whatever their situation in life, we want to be there for them," Malone added.
The Bishop cited Pope Francis' call for clergy to "accompany people" along their journey in life, no matter their circumstances.
The Appeal runs through June 30.
