Despite debt, Council approves $250k BMHA loan

Chris Caya WBFO News

A week after Buffalo's Comptroller voiced concerns about the BMHA's outstanding debt the Common Council signed off on another loan for the Housing Authority.

Despite owing millions of dollars to the city of Buffalo, the Common Council approved another loan for the BMHA. By a 6-3 vote, lawmakers granted the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority $250,000. Before the vote, Council President Darius Pridgen said the city needs a policy that's fair to all organizations that borrow money.

"Most community centers, right now, would be closed, in the city of Buffalo. And most of the people who are responsible for the bills are no longer on their boards."

Afterward, BMHA Executive Director, Dawn Sanders-Garrett told WBFO News, "this is a great day for the Housing Authority and residents of the Fredrick Douglas Towers." Sanders-Garrett says the funding will be used for the Towers' day-to-day operations.
