Schumer hopes for movement on Supreme Court vacancy

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Senator Charles Schumer remains hopeful that his Senate colleagues will move forward with the Supreme Court nomination of Merrick Garland.

Schumer made his comments while in Buffalo Sunday for the Saint Patrick's Parade. Earlier in the day, Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Garland nomination won't be considered, even if a Democrat wins in November.

There has been talk that if the winner is Democratic, Garland's nomination would be considered during a lame duck session after the election and before a new president is sworn in.

Schumer says some Republicans aren't sure they want to just ignore the Garland nomination.

"He's a down the road, bipartisan, moderate guy. There's almost nothing bad people can say about him," Schumer said.

"I think many of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle are going to decide, they should at least give him a hearing and they will see what happens. They want to vote No, they can vote No."

This is the high court vacancy created by the sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Schumer says Republicans may be rolling the dice in blocking the nomination in an election year.
