Woman's death stirs more Holding Center controversy

Chris Caya, wbfo

A small group of activists outside the Erie County Holding Center were demanding "Justice for India" Wednesday.

India Cummings, 27,  was arrested February 1st after carjacking a vehicle in Lackawanna and leading police on a chase that ended in a crash. Three weeks later she was transferred to Buffalo General where she died. Protesters claim Cummings' death is just the latest in a long string of Holding Center incidents.

"It's no fluke. People are not being cared for in here (inside the Holding Center)," said Victoria Ross of the Western New York Peace Center.

"They are dying. Are they being killed? However, its happening, it's wrong."

Cummings' death is being investigated by the New York State Commission of Correction. According to her family's attorney, Cummings had a broken arm, broken ribs and other injuries.
