Senior housing complex proposed for North Street

Westmont on North

What was known for nearly five decades as the Nazareth Nursing Home in Buffalo's Allentown neighborhood may soon be demolished to make way for a new senior living facility. The proposal for Westmont on North was presented to the Buffalo Planning Board last night.

Plans call for the abandoned Nazareth building to be demolished for a new structure. The project is estimated to cost $20 million, and is completely privately funded.

Westmont Managing Partner Bill Reich said this facility will take a different approach from the ownership-based arrangements at other senior complexes. They will offer monthly rental rates at what Reich calls "in line with the current market," and he said the units will be nicer than other facilities.

Plans call for 123 suites with 136 beds, as well as a memory care wing, which Reich said is in great demand. He said it will be "a lockdown unit that's self-enclosed... those people are very able, not in wheelchairs or bed-ridden. There's a great need for that."

Reich said a small number of people have already been added to a waiting list for the facility, which he hopes will be operating by spring, 2018. A formal vote on the project is expected in early April.
