Layoffs at Yahoo underway

Yahoo's global restructuring is impacting local workers. The company has about 200 employees at its data center in Lockport. But one local government official sees benefits in the layoffs.

If Yahoo follows its 15 percent global workforce reduction plan, about 30 local workers will lose their jobs. Town of Lockport Economic Development Coordinator Marc Smith says normally, companies that face challenges head-on turn out stronger.

"They've been great partners for the community. In the money that they give to foundations. In the help that their employees give in to local charities. And they've really been a great addition in to the community. And I suspect they will be in the future," Smith said.

Yahoo, according to Smith, will be offering a generous severance package to its laid off workers. He says regardless of what happens to Yahoo in the long-term, its data center will remain valuable.
