More people are showing a preference for alternative forms of transportation. That's according to a recent survey conducted by Go Buffalo Niagara.
"Between biking, transit and car-sharing opportunities, which have emerged in the past few years, we're starting to see a mix of options," said Kelly Dixon, Senior Transportation Planner with the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council.
Dixon offered perspective on the survey in which 47 percent of respondents indicated an interest in a subsidized Metro Pass. Another 26 percent expressed a preference for indoor bicycle parking at their workplace.
The results show changing attitudes for commuters, some of whom may want to reduce the cost of getting to work. A recent study pegged the annual cost of car travel at nearly $9,000.
"Within the city of Buffalo they've recently completed a city-wide bicycle facility master plan. They're committed to the the construction of ten miles of bike lanes per year," Dixon said.
"They've been doing that for a few years now so I think we're really starting to see that pay off with more people biking."
