Buffalo's official snowless streak is over. The National Weather Service says the season's first measurable snow was recorded at the airport weather station Friday night. Meteorologist Aaron Reynolds says December 18, 2015 now goes into the record book.
"We did officially pick up a tenth-of-an-inch," Reynolds said. "We set the record of the latest date to receive a measurable snowfall."
The previous record was December 3, 1899.
The lake effect snow, which began in the Buffalo area late Friday afternoon, quickly moved into the Southern Tier. A lake effect snow warning continues until 10:00 Saturday night for southern Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Wyoming Counties. A less severe lake snow advisory covers Allegany County.
Another two to four inches could fall in the heaviest snow bands.
Accumulations so far include eight inches in the town of Humphrey in Cattaraugus County, six inches in Franklinville and five inches in Sardinia.
