A member of the New York Air National Guard at the Niagara Falls Air Base has been honored for life-saving actions.

Technical Sgt. Jason Oehlbeck of Webster New York was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and the New York State Meritorious Service Medal on Sunday.

While attending training at the Hancock Field Air National Guard Base on October 27, Oehlbeck was staying at the Embassy Suites in Syracuse. When another guest at the hotel suffered a cardiac arrest, Oehlbeck quickly responded to calls for help from hotel staff. He performed continuous CPR for 18 minutes, during which time the man regained and lost pulse three times.

Oehlbeck has served as an aircraft electrician with the 107th Airlift Wing’s 136th Airlift Squadron since 2007, and served in Kuwait in 2013.

He received his awards from 107th Airlift Wing Commander Col. Robert Kilgore before 400 members of his unit.

Avery began his broadcasting career as a disc jockey for WRUB, the University at Buffalo’s student-run radio station.
