Former Peace Corps volunteers broke Thanksgiving bread Sunday night with the refugees living in the shelter Vive.
There are around 200 former Peace Corps volunteers locally and some get together to talk and reminisce and help people in this country as they did outside this country.
Some have done it twice. John Rex was one of the first volunteers going to Ethiopia and after retiring as a teacher and a minister went to Namibia.
Audrey Seidel worked as a teacher in Colombia and laments those trying to cut the U.S. off from the outside world.
"It's a terrible mistake to pull away from the world because the only we we're going to solve problems around the world is getting to understand the different kinds of people and become part of the world," Seidel said.
"No, we should never pull away or close our borders. Here, we are at Vive with people from all over the world and we're having Thanksgiving dinner with them and they're so grateful to be here."
The dinner was served by volunteer students from Orchard Park and Grand Island, with some thinking about making that commitment to overseas work themselves.
