A chain reaction accident on Grand Island last night has caused minor injuries to a New York State Police Officer. Trooper Joseph Menna is being treated at ECMC after he was knocked over a highway guardrail by a car involved in the accident and he tumbled down an embankment. Trooper James O'Callaghan of Troop A is a Public Information Officer for the New York State Police. He gave WBFO a description of how the accident occurred.

"At about 9:05 PM, we did have a trooper do a traffic stop on a vehicle, and he was approaching the car. There was an accident behind him. Then, as some of those cars from that accident approached him, the vehicle that he had stopped had been hit, and he had been hit by one of those vehicles."

The accident began when a car approaching the scene attempted to brake, and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Four cars were involved in the crash, and charges in the incident are pending the completion of the investigation.

A section of the southbound I-190 on Grand Island was closed until 2 this morning as investigation crews combed the area.
