A plaque was unveiled along the Ellicott Creek Bike Path on Friday, honoring the woman who's dedication to a cause made the popular trailway possible. Judith Chick battled Washington to secure funding for a flood control program after devastating floods struck her Amherst neighborhood in 1985. A requirement mandated that a portion of that funding be directed to a public works project, thus the bike path was created.
Deputy County Supervisor Guy Marlette stated that Chick's significance in securing the funding is too often overlooked.
"I think it's important to remember, a lot of people think in this area this bike path as being created by the Town of Amherst. The bike path was created with federal funding, and it was a direct result of Judy's efforts."
The Ellicott Creek Trailway was constructed in 1988. Chick past away in June of this year. Friends, fellow activists and local dignitaries were on hand for the unveiling.
