A new semester is underway at the University of Buffalo, and so, too, is a new initiative in learning. The school has launched what it is calling its Communities of Excellence. As UB Provost Charles Zukoski explained on Capitol Pressroom these communities break the boundaries of a single classroom to engage a variety of disciplines in a broader scope of learning.

"These communities are leading to new degree programs that cut across different sort of decanal units or departments in the university to think about how to bring together expertise from many different disciplines to attack major problems that society is facing."

The plan for the Communities of Excellence grew out of UB 2020 and was first made public in May of this year.

The concentrations that comprise the learning disciplines are health, manufacturing and the environment.
