Benczkowski wins Democratic line in Cheektowaga Supervisor race

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

The internal political warfare among Cheektowaga Democrats continues, with an affiliate of the county party winning a tough race for supervisor to replace the retiring Mary Holtz. Councilwoman Diane Benczkowski beat Town Clerk Alice Magierski.

The result was a reversal of the 2007 race when Magierski won for town clerk.

"I am totally overwhelmed," said Benczkowski as she celebrated at county Democratic headquarters.
"I wanted just to thank everybody so much for all your help and your belief in me that I could win this tonight. Thank you Chairman Zellner for helping me and the staff on the Democrat Headquarters and all the committee people who came out to help me for the last six weeks."

Democrats say that political ground warfare is a test of what the party will be doing in the push to get County Executive Poloncarz a second term and getting Cheektowaga Democrats to the polls is a key part of that.
