Senecas open new gateway to the Cattaraugus Territory

Chris Caya WBFO News

The Seneca Nation of Indians officially opened the new "Gateway to the Western Door" on their Cattaraugus Territory in Irving Friday. The Seneca's partnered with the state on more than $30 million worth of improvements, including three new bridges and a roundabout to replace the intersection of Routes 5 & 20 with Route 438.

Seneca President Maurice John said it was the second most dangerous intersection in the state.

"It was common to see three to four accidents per month here. We've lost lives here. We have spirits among us here that have paid the price to have this happen today. We now have a primary access point helping that commercial corridor east and west," John said.

More than 16,000 vehicles travel that section of Routes 5 & 20 everyday.

Along with road improvements, the project included a new gateway park with a pavilion, signage and artwork.
