Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Senator Robert Ortt along with other elected officials gathered in North Tonawanda Saturday to celebrate and call for the NFTA to reinstate two Niagara County bus routes.
Ortt spoke out against the NFTA decision to discontinue Paratransit service on the 57 flex bus route in North Tonowanda and part of the 55L route that travels between Lockport and Niagara Falls. Paratransit service is for individuals severely limited in mobility. Ortt says removal of these routes will compromise the independence of developmentally disabled people.
The ADA law requires Paratransit services by public entities that provide fixed route services. Tonawanda and Lockport are 2 of 3 major population centers in Niagara County. The NFTA has scheduled to cut the routes March 2016.
