Emergency rescue personnel were called to the Niagara Gorge last night to rescue an injured hiker. The Niagara Parks Police, the Niagara Falls Fire Department and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were called to a section of the lower Niagara River at around 7:30. A 32-year-old Canadian man had been hiking with friends in an off-limits area when he fell a short distance and injured his leg. The High Angle River Team was able to pull the man from the gorge and prepare him for transport to a nearby hospital. The rescue took nearly 90 minutes.
Investigators identified alcohol as a contributing factor in the accident, and a provincial offense notice was issued.
There has been no report on the condition of the hiker.
