The Red Cross has been called to assist an East Side family after an early morning fire. Alarms rang just before one o'clock this morning, drawing rescue crews to the 300 block of Sherman Street. Firefighters found the second floor of the structure burning. The fire was brought under control, but there was considerable damage to the home. Estimates target the loss at better than $25,000.
A candle has been blamed for the blaze. There was no electricity on the second floor, so candles were being used for lighting.
Everyone escaped the home safely.
