After recently being named president of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Buffalo Niagara, Sabina Ramsey says the group is looking to "to create a movement, a new movement for women business owners here regionally."
"In total there are 9.1 million firms in the United States that are owned by women. We employ a total of 7.9 million people, generating $1.4 trillion in sales," Ramsey told WBFO News.
"So, we are a big part of the country's economy, but are not always in a position of power."
The regional chapter of NAWBO is looking to change that. The group has set the ambitious goal of doubling its local membership.
She acknowledges that owning a business isn't for everyone.
"You have to be very driven, You have to be open-minded and you have to be willing to fail. In order to succeed you will have had to fail many times. The sooner you get up after a fall, the better it is. You have to have enormous resilience. I think that is the finest quality of an entrepreneur."
Ramsey possesses first-hand experience as a business owner. She's the founder and managing partner of Insight International USA, a creative design firm for digital and print media.
"I have a little bit a different background. I am an immigrant here to the United States. With that comes the notion of 'making it,' 'the Land of Opportunity,' so to speak,' Ramsey explained.
"I felt very early on that being a young mother with children, I wanted the best of two worlds. I did want a career, but I also wanted to be a present mother. That was the basically the motivation for me to start my own business way back."
