UB sports volunteers help sell coffee for 'Camp Day'

Michael Mroziak, WBFO

One of the region's most popular coffee chains is raising funds Wednesday to send underpriveleged kids to summer camps. In Amherst, they got some help from folks who are otherwise seen on the football field or basketball court.

Tim Hortons, one of the region's most popular coffee chains, is hosting its annual Camp Day, during which proceeds from coffee sales support their programs sending underprivileged youths to summer camps. Most of the camps are located in Southern Ontario but there is one located in Kentucky as well.

"It helps underprivileged children so they learn socialization skills and leadership skills, and really helps them build their self-esteem and help them learn qualities that will help them in life," said Rita Bella-Bennett, the general manager of the Tim Hortons location in Amherst where volunteers from University at Buffalo and Daemen College athletics programs were volunteering their services.

Representing UB were officials from the football and women's basketball programs.

"There's so many great people in Western New York and the Buffalo area," said UB football head coach Lance Leipold. "I think if we can be partnered with them, I think they're going to see they're going to have a great experience watching out teams play. Hopefully these partnerships can continue to grow."
