Special Olympics torch passing through WNY this week

Hundreds of law enforcement officers are expect to take part in Torch Run ceremonies across Western New York this week for the upcoming Special Olympics."Special Olympics is the largest amateur sports organization in the world," says Erica Raeplle of Special Olympics New  York. "In New York State alone, we have 65,665 athletes...  Special Olympics New York is the largest program in the United States and the sixth largest in the world."

WBFO's Jay Moran spoke with Raeplle about the Torch Run on Morning Edition...

The 2015 Special Olympics State Summer Games open this Friday, June 5th, with the lighting of the cauldron in Brockport.

Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. - 10 a.m.

Jay joined Buffalo Toronto Public Media in 2008 and has been local host for NPR's "Morning Edition" ever since. In June, 2022, he was named one of the co-hosts of WBFO's "Buffalo, What's Next."

A graduate of St. Mary's of the Lake School, St. Francis High School and Buffalo State College, Jay has worked most of his professional career in Buffalo. Outside of public media, he continues in longstanding roles as the public address announcer for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and as play-by-play voice of Canisius College basketball.
