A controversial idea is gaining traction in Buffalo as a means for improving education for city students. Public boarding schools are being tried in Washington, D.C., and at least two supporters are making plans to bring the concept to Buffalo. The schools isolate students from distractions, immersing them into a learning environment.

Estimated costs reach near $25,000 per student each year.

School Board member Carl Paladino and former charter school dean Tanika Shedrick are promoting the idea.
