History buffs, rejoice. A traveling Magna Carta exhibit in the atrium of Buffalo's federal courthouse opens on Tuesday. The display features images of the Magna Carta and manuscripts, books and other documents from the rare book collections of the Library of Congress.
Exhibit spokesman Gary Gaffney notes the document, first signed by England's King John, laid the foundation for individual rights.
"It provides a pathway that there is nobody that is above the law. In King John's time, the king was above the law," Gaffney says.
"It was symbolic that the monarch is not autocratic and does not have all the power, that the people can have some rights in the system."
The exhibit, called "Magna Carta: Enduring Legacy 1215-2015," will be on display in the atrium of the courthouse until April 21.
