While thousands of Western New Yorkers are spending their Friday at the Broadway Market stocking up on butter lambs and other traditional Easter holiday foods, one traditional staple is in short supply this year -- pussy willows.Lewandowski Produce is facing the possibility of running out of the item. Owner Daria Parker says the weather is to blame, with a lack of sunshine keeping the plants from sprouting.
"The trees need to bud in order to cut them," Parker said. "There's nothing we can do. We're cutting more now."
Pussy willows are a popular item, especially on Dyngus Day, which is celebrated the day after Easter. Based on Polish tradition, boys would smack girls they like with the flower as a sign of affection.
