Special clinic to address Hepatitis A concerns

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

The Erie County Health Department says up to 2,000 people should visit a special clinic at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center Monday or Tuesday because they ate at Casa di Pizza. A server there has been found to have Hepatitis A.

The State Health Department learned on Friday the unidentified Casa di Pizza server was infected and Erie County was notified immediately and on Saturday sanitarians swept through the restaurant and found some problems which have been cleared up.

Health Commissioner Doctor Gale Burstein said those at risk ate there. This doesn't involve those who bought take-out or drank in the bar. Doctor Burstein says there's special attention to other employees.

"Looking for a possible infection among employees is conducting surveillance for signs and symptoms of Hepatitis A. We're also strongly encouraging all the other employees of Casa di Pizza to get immunized to protect them against Hepatitis A. Or, depending on their age get the immuno globulin to protect them," Burstein said.

Doctor Burstein said it's not clear how the server became infected with what's usually a food-borne disease. The special clinic in the Convention Center will run from noon to eight tonight and from eight tomorrow morning to six tomorrow afternoon.
