An enthusiastic crowd on Friday braved sub-zero temperatures for the start of the 8th annual Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament at RiverWorks, which runs through the weekend. Upgrades and new activities give spectators a different experience from past years, as players took to the ice. The renovated complex allows players to enjoy hockey under a roof and fans to mingle on the outdoor patio.
Visitors said they are pleased with the improvements. Kathy Mills of Buffalo says she comes with her son every year.
"I was here last year and they had just gotten the rinks ready. None of this was done. It looks so beautiful now. It's amazing," said Mills.
John Wichalla of Tonawada, who plays for the team Five Holes, says he is excited for the games.
"I wouldn't miss this event for anything. It's great times, great fun, so its going to be a good weekend," Wichalla said.
The party-like atmosphere includes live music and a Canadian artist, David Arrigo, painting two pond hockey-theme murals on-site. Arrigo says the mural serves a key purpose for the event.
"We're just trying to celebrate the entire weekend through images such as the riverfront with the beer cans in the background. And, of course, a little pond hockey going on," Arrigo said.
Many other events are scheduled through Sunday night, when the three-day tournament ends.
