While many were inside staying warm on a chilly Sunday in Western New York, a few local residents celebrated the Winter Solstice with a bicycle ride from Front Park.
The group, Buffalo by Bicycle, welcomed in winter during a party in Front Park, one of the group's seasonal events. Some are held in slightly better weather although participants say last year's party was thinly attended because last winter arrived early and stayed late.
Partiers arrived in winter gear, with bikes covered with lights; some bikes were fit with snow tires.
The group then headed off down Niagara Street to an indoor party.
Jack Courtney is one of the organizers and admits some would say they are nuts.
"In Buffalo, I mean we have the ice skating on Canalside, you could say that's nuts. It's nuts to go outside in Buffalo on this, the shortest day of the year. But, we embrace it," Courtney said.
"We're Buffalonians and we have a good portion of our year that it's nuts to do anything and by gum we're gonna do it."
During the party, bikers did some planning on the party for the coming of spring, the "Tweed Party."
