Poloncarz defends county response to storm

Cheryl Hagen/WBFO News

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz is defending the county's efforts during last month's snow storm as officials in the Southtowns compare notes on the clean up.

County Executive Poloncarz calls the storm the "greatest snow storm any one of us has even seen." He  notes the significant amount of snow that fell over a short period of time, more than 7 feet in some areas. Poloncarz contends the county worked quickly, using an emergency system called DLAN to communicate with towns and villages.

"The communities that were the largest complainers about the D-LAN system, never used it," says Poloncarz, adding "try using the system, before you complain about it and then you'll find out the system works.  South Cheektowaga had the most snow of any community, and Cheektowaga was the first community to lift its' driving ban."

Poloncarz says the county is offering training sessions on DLAN later this month for those towns and villages in need.

Meanwhile, town supervisors, highway superintendents, and emergency personnel from the Southtowns gathered yesterday to discuss ways to improve their response to the next big storm and begin working to set up the task force aimed at identifying problems and solutions.
