Death toll rises from storm

Cheryl Hagen/WBFO

More deaths are being reported today as the remnants of "Winter Storm Knife" continue to plague areas of the Southtowns.Cheektowaga Assistant Police Chief Jim Speyer says a 50-year-old man was found deceased in his vehicle on Innsbruck Drive.  The vehicle was located in the snow only several hundred yards off of Union Road.

Deputy Erie County Executive Richard Tobe announced two deaths resulting from the evacuation of the Garden Gate Health Care Facility in Cheektowaga.  Tobe says two elderly residents died while being transported from the nursing home.  The facility was evacuated due to concerns about the roof collapsing.

Garden Gate officials say they can only confirm one death and maintain it occurred after the resident arrived at what they're calling a "receiving destination" set up at AppleTree Business Park.  Officials with the nursing home also say they can not confirm a second death of a Garden Gate resident.

The deaths reported today add to the 10 earlier deaths reported this week.  The earlier deaths were the result of cardiac arrest, exposure and other weather related tragedies.
