Arson a possibility in Howard Street fire

Chris Caya/WBFO News

Investigators are still looking for the cause of a four-alarm fire that destroyed a Howard Street warehouse Tuesday. Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield says firefighters responded earlier in the day for a fire in a barrel and later for a vehicle fire on the property near Fillmore Avenue. Whitfield says it has not been determined whether or not the blaze was arson.

"That is all apart of the investigation. We're trying to see if those fires were connected," Whitfield said at a news briefing Wednesday afternoon.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the blaze. Whitfield says damage estimates to the building and its contents total about $1.2 million. He says investigators are following several leads.

"Our fire marshals are diligently interviewing persons," Whitfield said.

Members of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives are assisting Buffalo Fire Marshals.
