Many recent stories have placed the spotlight on the dangerous realities of domestic violence. Advocates on Monday paid honor to victims during a rally on the steps of Buffalo City Hall.
"I'd like to start with a moment of silence for Natalie Thompson who was shot and killed at the hands of her abuser Tuesday October 21 and for Patricia Rodriguez who was stabbed 108 times in 1979," said Brooke Densing of the Erie County Coalition against Family Violence as she addressed the crowd.
"On Friday, October 24, justice was served when an Erie County Court found Michael Rodriguez guilty of second degree murder after killing his wife."
Several speakers called for a stop to domestic violence, a result that is possible as long as people fight back. Police, prosecutors and social services agencies say they can help though they acknowledge several obstacles.
Statistics show one in four women is abused in her lifetime. Compounding the problems is a national shortage of alternative housing for women and children who leave abusive environments.
