UB fires head football coach Jeff Quinn

The University at Buffalo has fired Head Football Coach Jeff Quinn, naming Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Alex Wood interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Quinn had been awarded a five-year contract extension in January of 2013, and went 8-5 last season to reach the Idaho Potato Bowl, the school's second bowl appearance since moving up to the top level of college football in 1999.

Quinn departs leaving the Bulls 3-4 on the season with speculation they may have to win all five remaining games to get a bowl berth.

UB is on a bye this week.

Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Alex Wood will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

UB's website notes in Wood's "first season as offensive coordinator, the offense saw significant improvement. UB averaged eight more points and 68 more yards of total offense per game than in 2010. Buffalo had 13 plays of 40 or more yards in 2011 - the most in its Division I era. "

The site adds "Wood brought with him over 30 years of experience at the Division I level and he has also served as a coordinator in the National Football League."

"His coaching career is highlighted by tremendous success at the highest levels of both college and professional football."

"Wood has also been a wide receiver coach in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, a quarterback coach for the Minnesota Vikings and the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals."

"Wood is a native of Massillon, Ohio, and was a standout football player and wrestler at Washington High School. He and his wife, Rosa, have three children--Jerrel, Alex and Natalie. His son Alex is the defensive coordinator at Wayne (NE) State College."
