A preliminary report shows that two small planes involved in a fatal collision in western New York were traveling along the same path when one descended at the same time the other climbed.
The report by the National Transportation Safety Board released Tuesday doesn't directly place blame for the Sept. 27 crash in Lancaster. The pilot of a Cessna and his 14-year-old passenger were killed while the pilot of a SeaRey and his 9-year-old passenger escaped injury. Both planes were taking part in an event to introduce children to flying.
The NTSB report says the westbound planes were traveling on roughly the same route when the faster Cessna caught up to the SeaRey and descended to 1,625 feet, just as the SeaRey climbed to the same altitude.
