Windy conditions helped turn a Niagara Falls industrial fire into a challenge for firefighters on Saturday. As many as 12 companies responded to the early afternoon call at the Greenpac Mill on Royal Avenue in the Cataract City. Flames were seen emanating from at least one building, while bundles of paper material outside of the plant created an inferno of their own. The blaze has burned for more 20 hours, but Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster says that the fire is currently under control.
"There's still large piles of smoldering cardboard and paper here, but there's no concern that the fire is going to spread. There's one building where the roof has collapsed, and that's making it difficult to get water on the fire inside that building, but I believe they are going to take down one of the walls in order to allow them to put water directly on that."
Dyster is asking residents connected to the city's water district to be conservative with water usage today as the system was highly taxed in battling the blaze.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
