The second phase of the Kenmore Avenue repaving project is underway. The City of Buffalo and Erie County agreed last year to a new maintenance plan for the road, half of which is owned by the city and the other half by the county.
Legislator Peter Savage said Kenmore Avenue's story is symbolic of the progress seen lately throughout Buffalo and Western New York.
"The old story was a story of divide. Unfortunately, far too often, people looked at Kenmore Avenue as dividing two great communities. Well, today, with this great work that began last year with the first phase, that continues this year with the second phase and moves onto the third phase. Kenmore Avenue is now a bridge," Savage said.
Buffalo Public Works Commissioner, Steve Stepniak said he expects the city will have the nearly one-mile stretch between Colvin Boulevard and Elmwood Avenue completed in about a month.
The city's and county's share of this phase of construction is roughly $500,000 each.
Last year, the County repaved about one mile of the road between Colvin Blvd and Fairfield. In 2015, Kenmore Ave. between Fairfield and Main Street will be resurfaced.
