The day started out a little wet but the weather didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of city participants in National Night Out.
For kids at Cazenovia Library in South Buffalo, they had a chance to try out a fire hose and see how to throw out a lot of water and still maintain control of the hose. At St. Mark's School in North Buffalo, kids had a chance to have face painting and see some of the equipment the NFTA police use to protect the transit system and two-airports.
Chief George Gast says it seemed a good way to meet the public.
"We actually have two Metro Rail stations within the confines of the Parkside neighborhood," Gast explained.
"These are customers of the NFTA who regularly use public transit and it gives the department and our officers an opportunity to come out and have good, positive interaction with our customers and with the public in general."
There was also a K-9 dog who liked playing with kids. St. Mark's is one of the largest parochial schools and there are a lot of kids in Parkside. That's why Parkside Community Association Executive Director Amber Small says her group sponsors National Night Out, with family-friendly games and play activities.
