A deputy at the Erie County Holding Center has been injured while attempting to subdue an inmate. The deputy was treated by on duty medical staff at the Holding Center and was transported to ECMC for further evaluation and treatment. Sheriff Timothy Howard reports that inmate Ivan Melendez was damaging his cell when deputies intervened. Melendez is then said to have turned violent, lashing out at the deputies.
The injured man has been identified only as Deputy Sinatra.
Damage to the cell was estimated at $2000. Additional charges are pending against Melendez.
