Sabres announcer Rick Jeanneret diagnosed with cancer

File photo

Longtime Buffalo Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret has been diagnosed with Stage 3 throat cancer.  Jeanneret was informed two weeks ago that he has a malignant golf ball-sized growth in his throat. The Hall of Fame announcer will undergo radiation therapy and possible chemotherapy. Doctors have told him he has an 85 percent chance of recovery.

The 71-year-old broadcaster says he does intend to return to the booth this fall for his 44th season calling Sabres games.

The Sabres organization said in a statement Wednesday it was "deeply saddened" to hear the news, saying "we...know his tenacity will serve him well in his fight."

A dedicated email address, GetWellRJ@sabres.com, has been set up for fans to send their well-wishes.
