Saying he's the candidate of New York's political left, Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins says his party will have a good year because there is discontent against Governor Cuomo.
Hawkins is on the road announcing his race this year and he was in Niagara Square Thursday pitching his party's message.
Four years ago, the Greens picked up enough votes for to keep the party line on the ballot for four years. Hawkins says he might get four times as many this year.
"Those of us who are working people, we're not voting because, you know, in general because we feel like no one's representing us," Hawkins said during his campaign stop.
"The program I'm putting out for a Green New Deal for New York which would provide full employment, living wages, affordable housing, transit, fully-funded public schools and a green energy plan to get us to clean energy. These are the things people want and when they hear it, I think they will come out and vote for us."
Hawkins says he's backing big changes in the state's tax system that would produce around $30 billion in extra revenues while cutting the income taxes for 95 percent of the state's taxpayers. He says this would allow enough money to run the public schools well and allow so much more revenue sharing local governments could cut their property taxes.
