The Buffalo Bisons begin another season of baseball at Coca-Cola Field. At the ballpark early this morning, team announcer Ben Wagner told WBFO News, "Everything is getting a thumbs up and we are ready for baseball!"
Today's opening at pitch at 2:05 pm comes just four days after a late March storm left as much a foot of snow in some areas of Western New York.
"The good news is we only had 4 and a half inches of snow (at Coca-Cola Field)," Wagner deadpanned.
Starting his eighth season behind the microphone for the Bisons, Wagner took time out of a very busy morning to chat with WBFO News.
He says two days of dry, sunny weather and the efforts of the grounds crew has created solid conditions to open another season of Buffalo baseball
"First and foremost, the safety for the players on the field is not a concern, so we are ready to open the gates and have some fun this afternoon."
22-year-old Marcus Stroman takes the mound for the Bisons today.
"He's the top-rated prospect the Blue Jays have placed in Buffalo this year," Wagner said.
"(Stroman) had a chance in spring training to crack the (Blue Jays) opening day roster."
Around the park fans will experience a new sound system, new message boards and some new food and beverage items
Looking to today and beyond, Wagner provides an optimistic note to local baseball fans.
"You can put winter in the rear view mirror, so to speak."
