Reconstructed Ohio Street seen as bridge between harbors

Chris Caya/WBFO News

More improvements are underway along Buffalo's waterfront. On Tuesday morning, elected leaders kicked off the reconstruction of Ohio Street. The $11 million project will transform the old industrial corridor from Michigan Avenue to Furhmann Boulevard into a tree-lined parkway between the Inner and Outer harbors.

Most of the funding was secured by Rep. Brian Higgins, who says the new parkway will be pedestrian friendly.

"It represents the land bridge between Canalside, the more densely developed downtown Buffalo, and the emerging new waterfront at the Outer Harbor," Higgins said.

Along with rebuilding the road, plans include biking and walking paths, street lighting, landscaping and new water and electric utilities.

Most of the work is expected to be completed by the fall.
