In light of the fire that claimed the life of 7-year-old Alexavier Torres-Santiago in the city on Sunday, Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield is reminding people to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their home.
It’s still undetermined whether the home at 1400 Fillmore Avenue in Buffalo had working smoke detectors, but while updating the press on the fatal blaze, Monday Fire Commissioner Whitfield took a moment remind everyone to make sure they have alarms installed in their own homes.
“We would take this opportunity to recommend to all to make sure that you have smoke detectors that do operate. You know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Whitfield.
Whitfield says the Buffalo Fire Department hands out thousands of free smoke detectors to people in need each year.
“We have smoke detectors available through the Mayor’s office. We still do have smoke detectors available if anyone does not have a smoke detector,” said Whitfield.
