Concerns over severe wind chills prompted dozens of area schools to close Tuesday.
"Looks like we're going to be dealing with these dangerously cold temperatures for the next 24 hours," said meteorologist Tony Ansuini of the Buffalo office of the National Weather Service.
A Wind Chill Warning continues until 11 a.m. Tuesday; A Wind Chill Advisory will then be in place for most of the region through 11 a.m. Wednesday.
"You only have to be outside for just a matter of minutes before you start to get into some frost bite situations," Ansuini said early Tuesday morning as temperatures hovered near zero and wind chills plunged to 21 below zero.
"The best advice I can give is that people should use common sense. If you're going to be outside, dress appropriately and cover as much of yourself as you can."
Though a thaw is not in the forecast, Ansuini promises "a little bit of moderation toward more normal winter temperatures by the end of the week and into the weekend."
