WBFO News photos by Eileen Buckley

A Lake Effect Snow Advisory is posted for parts of the Western New York region for New Year's Eve day.

A Lake Effect Snow Advisory for Northern Erie and Genesee Counties from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

In Southern Erie County, Wyoming and Chautauqua Counties an advisory will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says three to five inches of snow is expected for the most persistent Lake Snows.

Winds will pick up 15 to 25- miles-per-hour with gust up to 35-miles-an-hour producing some blowing and driving snow. Those conditions will create poor visibility, down to a quarter of a mile at times.

Forecasters say a quick burst of Lake Effect Snow is expected Tuesday morning and travel conditions will "quickly deteriorate" with  snow covers roads and blowing snow.

It was a snowy start to the work week Monday morning as snow fell across across metro Buffalo.  Area streets were snow covered and visibility was down to about a half-a-mile.   A chance of snow will continue in Buffalo and it will be cold.  Temperatures will only reach the mid to upper teens Monday.  Another one to two inches of new snow is possible Monday night.

For Tuesday, Lake Effect snow is expected in the morning hours, then turning to snow showers. Another three to five inches of snow is expected to accumulate.  It will be bitter cold for New Year's Eve.  Daytime temperatures will be in the lower 20's and windy with gust of up to 40-miles-per-hour.

If you heading to downtown Buffalo's Ball Drop Tuesday evening, dress warm, lows will be only 10 to 15 degrees with windy conditions and gust up to 40-miles-per-hour.
