Protests in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev brought protesters from both sides of the border to the Peace Bridge Sunday.Waving yellow and blue flags of Ukraine, as well as U.S. and Canadian flags, the protesters were there to support the young people in Kiev's Independence Square who want their country to join Europe and not Russia.
The government is split, with the country's president recently returning from Moscow saying he had received $15 billion in financing from Vladimir Putin.
Toronto Resident Krystina Walier recently spent three weeks in Kiev where she met young people who want the future, not the past.
"I was there from the first days when it was just students. There were very few people. They were all very hopeful and ready for a change," Walier said.
"These are kids who did not grow up during Soviet times so they don't even understand what being part of the Soviet Union means. They're ready to be part of Europe and the freedoms that they see all over the Internet."
The crowd represented generations of the Ukrainian people. All say they want the people of Ukraine, not the current government, to get the choice of East or West.
